Don't log in to the console and xrdp at the same time, Have a console admin user which you only use on the console. Use xrdp for other purposes. Try the instructions on the xrdp wiki for disabling the coupling between sessions. This doesn't work for GNOME, but definitely works for XF...
So had not run any updates yet and get the same error. Created a new user with the same groups as the pi user and it works without any problems. Fresh install was done using raspberry pi imager today. Using Xorg, but it seems to use a different interface than the default that pi use...
