For what it’s worth, I couldn’t get this to work at all on my 64-bit version of VLC in Windows 10. You might have better luck with the 32-bit version, or on different video types, but I wouldn’t install a different version of VLC on a 64-bit systemjustfor this little trick...
Thank you. This worked for me as well. I had the 64 bit version installed and after I had done the settings mentioned in the article above the screen still froze. I uninstalled the VLC 64 bit version and installed the VLC 32 bit version on Windows 10 64 bit. Problem solved!!!
