Covalent and Ionic Bonds There are different ways that atoms can deal with the instability of not having a full valence level. The electronegativity of atoms, or the ability of the atom to attract a pair of bonding electrons, can help us predict how atoms will deal with this problem. When...
much of theirpragmaticunderstanding of bonds is expressed in simple intuitive models. These models treat bonds as primarily of two kinds—namely, ionicandcovalent. The type of bond that is most likely to occur between two atoms can be predicted on the basis of the location of theelementsin the...

Chemical bonding - Atomic Structure, Intermolecular Forces, Covalent Bonds: To understand bond formation, it is necessary to know the general features of the electronic structure of atoms—that is, the arrangement of electrons around the central nucleus.
I remembered that polyatomic ions are supposed to be covalent compounds, but in a chromate ion, there is chromium, which is a transition metal, so it can't be covalent (since covalent bonds are between non-metals), right? Also, I can't figure out the structure of chromate ion....
